Free Role Playing Game Supplement Review: Gregorius21778: That Old Mad Monk

Gregorius21778: That Old Mad Monk is a role playing game supplement written and published by Kai Pütz a.k.a Gregorius21778. This is a supplement for Mörk Borg that has a single NPC that can be encountered.

The supplement is available as a 7-page PDF for free from DriveThruRPG. One page is the front cover and half the front matter.

Gregorius21778: That Old Mad MonkThe introductory paragraphs explain that this is a gimmick to spice up the start of a game. It’s assumed characters are in a town or village about to set off on a new adventure when they meet this NPC.

Who is this Old Mad Monk? gives the NPCs name and explains that he is the sole survivor of an adventuring party, or maybe he’s just mad. His stats are given. This is followed by a d66 table of reactions.

The 36 reactions on the table are then gone into in detail. Each is given a paragraph and none necessarily make sense; the NPC is not exactly rational, after all, and their reactions echo this. Many have game effects, both positive and negative. Some are useful, some are potentially dangerous and some are frankly unpleasant.

The PDF lacks bookmarks and as it essentially covers a single NPC and their reactions these are not needed. Navigation is fine. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be mostly free of errors. There are some filler black and white illustrations. Presentation is okay.

This supplement is exactly what it sets out to be; a single NPC who is encountered and then reacts in a way that may not make a lot of sense. Though the reactions that require them are statted for Mörk Borg, it would take minimal effort to convert them to other systems, though the Old Mad Monk will probably work better in odder settings (Lamentations of the Flame Princess springs to mind). Gregorius21778: That Old Mad Monk is a nice little supplement and it can be downloaded for free by clicking here.
