Free Role Playing Game Supplement Review: Carnage Amongst the Depraved aka All About Big Stupid Monsters – World Walkers’ Edition

Carnage Amongst the Depraved aka All About Big Stupid Monsters – World Walkers’ edition by John Josten is a role playing game supplement published by Board Enterprises. This is part of the Small Bites series and is the “World Walker” version. Normally the full version, which is close to three times the length of this edition, is only available to Patreon supporters. However, this is part of the Endless Dungeon series and the Game Masters’ edition, which contains an adventure, is also available to buy.

The supplement is available for free as a 17-page PDF from DriveThruRPG. One page is the front cover.

Carnage Amongst the Depraved aka All About Big Stupid Monsters - World Walkers' editionThe Introduction explains that “big stupid monsters” may not be as smart as human, but that doesn’t mean they’re useless, mentioning the supplements on ogres.

The Fletnern Wiki duplicates entries from the wiki in the category of Endless Dungeon, and includes sites, regions, tribes, races, animals and cities.

The Sounding Board duplicates blog posts. Ogres and Giants and Trolls… Oh My! considers how to make such beings realistic. Truly huge monsters are pretty difficult to kill by human-sized creatures.

Movie Monsters In-Game references Predators and looks at formorian giants.

So, What Exactly is Cannibalism? tries to define this; in a fantasy world, there are many intelligent creatures, so is eating them cannibalism?

How to Play a… Dumb Character discusses how to do so, well, intelligently. A character without a lot of smarts may well know they lack smarts and thus walk away rather than risk being conned into something. It also discusses game bullies and how to stop them, as such can be disruptive.

What’s Missing? is about two and a half pages long and details what’s in the full supplement.

In Conclusion warps things up and also has various links, followed by a Patreon ad.

The final two pages have a players’ map of Brinston and a regional map of Brinston and the Slyvanian Forest, which is a more detailed map of a region of the larger map.

Carnage Amongst the Depraved aka All About Big Stupid Monsters – World Walkers’ edition in Review

The PDF is bookmarked with major and minor sections linked. There is also a hyperlinked Table of Contents. Navigation is decent. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are a number of stock black and white illustrations, plus two partly-coloured maps. Presentation is okay.

As is usual for this series, this is a collection of loosely connected articles all roughly on the same subject; predominately big creatures who are, at best, as smart as humans. The amount of content included is less than would be found in most of the range, with this being the player version of an adventure issue. As usual, the author goes into a fair level of depth on the different matters.
