A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Wisdom from the Wastelands Issue #49: Unique Superscience Artifacts V

Wisdom from the Wastelands Issue #49: Unique Superscience Artifacts V is a role playing game supplement published by Skirmisher Publishing for use with the Mutant Future system. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License though no parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result. The Wisdom from the Wastelands series introduces new options for Mutant Future and this one has a selection of advanced technology.

The supplement is available as a seven-page PDF on DriveThruRPG for $0.99 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. One page is the Open Game License and front matter and one is ads.

Wisdom from the Wastelands Issue #49: Unique Superscience Artifacts VThe opening paragraphs explain that this presents items that are so advanced they seem magical in nature, using spells from Labyrinth Lord‘s Advanced Edition Companion and mutations from Mutant Future.

Hands are two hands with metal discs in them that once were a psychiatrist’s. They are dangerous to activate, as they may turn the user to stone, but if successful they gain mental powers and can detect invisible. However, they are not designed for regular wear.

Ice Fountain is an item intended to colonise arid regions but now only produces ice, very cold water and high humidity. It can also control weeds and vermin populations around it, as well as the climate of an area encircling it.

Master Remote is a device that can transport items through wormholes, request fire missions from an orbital station, request protection from the station and direct several orbital mirrors to turn night into day. The orbital station can also be developed at the ML’s desire.

Bear Mask causes children’s dreams and nightmares to become real as well as protect the child wearing it with a force wall. It will not work for an adult. It can reduce pain felt around it, warp light waves, create holograms and paralyse people.

Big Al’s Horn is a trumpet-like instrument that can cause fear, charm creatures, help them become more or less susceptible to influences, project an image, rouse fighting spirit or randomly cause negative reactions.

Cat Mask causes a hatred of rodents and fear of dogs and inflict lethal dreams.

Chef Cube can destroy pathogens in food, add drugs, referencing Issue #33, create a cloud of fog, accidentally create food that might start to grow into larger versions or animate a food mass.

Crown of Ultimate Power is intended for pets and can produce holograms, increase strength, remove fear, manipulate others, manipulate small light-emitting drones or emit an extremely powerful bolt of electricity.

Dome of Fire is a building protected by extensive defences on the outside and inside has a regulated environment which includes an addictive gas with negative side-effects.

Wisdom from the Wastelands Issue #49: Unique Superscience Artifacts V in Review

The PDF is bookmarked, with major sections linked. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be almost free of errors. There are some stock tweaked colour images. Presentation is okay.

Once again, this is fluff about how a device operates combined with spell and mutation mechanics to power these. The items are an interesting collection, though a couple are perhaps a little too powerful in parts and a couple are also extremely negative when used. Wisdom from the Wastelands Issue #49: Unique Superscience Artifacts V is another useful collection of strange items and it can be found by clicking here.
