A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Whiskey in the Jar (A Whiskeypunk Scenario for TSRPG)

Whiskey in the Jar (A Whiskeypunk Scenario for TSRPG) is a role playing game supplement published by Skirmisher Publishing for use with TSRPG.

The supplement is available as an 18-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $2.99 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three the front matter and one is an ad.

Whiskey in the Jar explains that the players take on the role of Irish fairy creatures who must steal a bottle of whiskey and use it as a trap for a Pooka.

Whiskey in the Jar (A Whiskeypunk Scenario for TSRPG)Background explains that it’s 19th century Ireland and the train tracks from Limerick to Tipperary are being laid. The characters have been summoned to a fairy mound where the rulers tell them that a smuggler who gets whiskey for them has been kidnapped by a Pooka and the characters must free him.

Running the Scenario explains how the scenario is presented and how to run Challenges.

Local Flavor has some details on 19th century Ireland.

Whiskey in the Jar is the adventure and it sees the characters arriving at the court, being given the mission, making their way to the distillery and finally confronting the Pooka and rescuing Paddy. Or failing and being banished from the Otherworld for seven years. Finally, there are a couple of optional encounters and some helpful items.

This is followed by character cards for the four characters, with images, background and their stats and equipment.

The final page of content is the rules for TSRPG itself, meaning that this adventure works standalone; the rules do not need to be purchased separately. The game is a storytelling game that is played through a series of Challenges; details of how these work, success and failure and difficulty are given.

Whiskey in the Jar (A Whiskeypunk Scenario for TSRPG) in Review

The PDF is bookmarked with major and minor sections linked. Navigation is decent. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are a number of colour images, some of which appear to be custom art, others tweaked images, as well as some colour maps. Presentation is decent.

This isn’t simply an adventure for TSRPG; as the, admittedly short, rules are also included, this is completely self-contained. And the game itself can be used again later, should a GM want to come up with their own adventures. This makes it better value for money. TSRPG itself is easy enough and definitely rules-lite. The adventure is most suited as a one-shot, given that it’s a specific location in a specific time period with pretty specific characters. The rules are easy enough to learn to run it as a one shot, even with players or a GM who are unfamiliar with TSRPG. Whiskey in the Jar (A Whiskeypunk Scenario for TSRPG) is a decent enough adventure and it can be found by clicking here.
