A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Weekly Wonders – Cavalier Archetypes
Weekly Wonders – Cavalier Archetypes by Alex Riggs and Joshua Zaback is a role playing game supplement published by Necromancers of the Northwest for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.
The supplement is available as a seven-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $1.49 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. Two pages are the front and rear covers, one the front matter and one the Open Game License.
The Introduction explains that the cavalier is a class representing the knight in shining armour, and perhaps because alternate options for it often focus on cavalier orders, there are few new archetypes.
The Arachknight was originally an elite order of drow cavaliers, and the vast majority still are drow. The arachknight uses a giant spider as their mount, can handle vermin, including mindless, gains the ability to create webs and has a familiarity and ability to produce poisons.
The Driven Warrior doesn’t use an animal as a mount; they use a vehicle. Rather Mad Max. Their skills relate to handling vehicles, including bonding to them, defending them and ramming.
The Favoured Knight specialises in performance combat. They compete in tournaments and jousts primarily, and are able to work the crowd.
The Lancer is an armoured knight that can cause a lot of damage using their lance, from unseating opponents to cutting swathes through foes.
Weekly Wonders – Cavalier Archetypes in Review
The PDF, despite its brevity, is fully bookmarked. Navigation is very good. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are no illustrations. Presentation is adequate.
This does provide four new archetypes, though at least two are perhaps rather limited. The Driven Warrior is going to have problems anywhere a vehicle won’t go, as they lose their archetype’s benefits, and the Favoured Knight is more of a show-off archetype than a useful one. The Lancer is perhaps best suited for use on the battlefield. This makes the Arachknight perhaps the best, and compared to the others it does seem rather more powerful, with more options for the character to use. Weekly Wonders – Cavalier Archetypes is a collection of four new archetypes of variable use and it can be found by clicking here.
