A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Vathak Terrors: Denizens of the Silver Tower
Vathak Terrors: Denizens of the Silver Tower by Brian Duckwitz is a role playing game supplement published by Fat Goblin Games for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.
The supplement is available as an 11-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $2.41 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. One page is the front cover, two the front matter and Contents and one the Open Game License.
The Introduction explains that the Silver Tower was built by yithians and where it is located in the setting. The tower functions as a portal that brings creatures from different places to the tower. It explains where the new monsters can be found in the tower, and then details other creatures from various bestiaries that can be found within. Finally, it references the Shadows over Vathak: The Colonies – Game Master’s Guide as a supplement to get more details on the setting locations.
Monsters has all new inhabitants of the Silver Tower and the lands around it. Riven are plants with humanoid legs that can take on the identity of those they swallow, explaining how they lure prey in. Skrianix are a mixture of insect and reptile that consider themselves the ultimate predators and hunters. The zworoam swarm consists of floating blobs of fluid that function as ambush predators.
Vathak Terrors: Denizens of the Silver Tower in Review
The PDF is bookmarked with the major sections linked. The Contents is to a similar level of depth and is hyperlinked. Navigation is decent. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are colour illustrations for each of the three new monsters. Presentation is decent.
This is a bestiary for the Shadows Over Vathak setting, which is a horror setting with Lovecraftian influences. As such, the monsters are of a darker kind. However, they are also easily transferable to other settings as these are simply new monsters; there may be some reference to where they are in the setting, but that is easily changed. Even the Silver Tower itself, not that it is described properly here, can be dropped into another setting. Vathak Terrors: Denizens of the Silver Tower is a decent small bestiary and it can be found by clicking here.
