A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Vathak 5e Character Options – Magic Items 1

Vathak 5e Character Options – Magic Items 1 by Ismael Alvarez is a role playing game supplement published by Fat Goblin Games for use with Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a two-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $1.75 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. One page is the credits and Open Game License.

The supplement has new magic items for the Shadows Over Vathak setting; in keeping with the setting’s horror-based theme, the magic items are more appropriate for such a theme.

The ghost ward lantern burns holy water and can ward off incorporeal undead.

Gladiator’s blood gloves are perpetually coated in blood and adds the strength bonus twice to unarmed attacks and enables a creature up to one size larger to be grappled, or two of the same size.

The longsword of piety doesn’t work for evil wielders and grants a bonus to attack and damage rolls, and can using its sole charge make a saving throw automatically succeed.

The sword of pursuit grants a bonus to attack and damage and creatures damaged with it can be tracked as a target.

The teeth of the dead allow a corpse to speak.

Undertaker’s oil can make a weapon deal damage to undead as if it was a magical weapon.

Vathak 5e Character Options – Magic Items 1 in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks, but with only one page of content, they aren’t needed. Navigation is fine. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors, though some of the descriptions of the magic items’ abilities looked a bit vague. There are no illustrations; one for each item would have been nice. Presentation is adequate.
