A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Vathak 5e Adventures – Lair of the Spawn of Yeghniths

Vathak 5e Adventures – Lair of the Spawn of Yeghniths by Ismael Alvarez is a role playing game supplement published by Fat Goblin Games for use with Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result. This is an adventure for 3-5 characters with an average level of 7.

Vathak 5e Adventures - Lair of the Spawn of YeghnithsThe supplement is available as a 13-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $3.95 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. Two pages are the front and rear covers, one the front matter and one the Open Game License.

Adventure Background explains that the town of Kandar has been affected by nightmares, and an earthquake hit the region about when these started.

Adventure Location explains that the adventure can be placed in any cold location but in Shadows over Vathak it is in Kandar in Moorhaven.

Adventure Hooks has a number of ways to get the characters involved.

Running this Adventure and Abbreviations explains what’s needed and how material is laid out. A sidebar gives some details on the Shadows over Vathak setting.

Beginning the Adventure has the characters arrive in town, and they can hear a cave was unearthed by a recent earthquake and that the townsfolk are suffering nightmares. What he is willing to pay is covered and, if the characters agree, they can make their way to the cave, with a d4 table of random encounters on the way.

The Lair then describes the different parts of the cave, along with a new magic item.

Appendix has details on a new monster, Spawn of Yeghniths, and its lair and lair actions.

Vathak 5e Adventures – Lair of the Spawn of Yeghniths in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation could be better. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are a number of colour images, including for the new monster and magic item, as well as a colour map. Presentation is decent.

There isn’t really a lot to this adventure; it involves going to a cave and defeating the monster that lives there. There aren’t really many other encounters or potential battles to be had, making this less an adventure and more of a single encounter, and rather expensive at full price.
