A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Vathak 5e Adventures – A Night at Wayside Inn

Vathak 5e Adventures – A Night at Wayside Inn by Ismael Alvarez is a role playing game supplement published by Fat Goblin Games for use with Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result. This is an adventure for 7th to 10th level characters.

Vathak 5e Adventures - A Night at Wayside InnThe supplement is available as a 13-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $3.95 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. Two pages are the front and rear covers, one the front matter and one the Open Game License.

Adventure Background explains that the inn has been taken over by a cult of hags who now prey on travellers.

Adventure Location explains that the inn can be placed anywhere.

Adventure Hooks has a number of ways to get the characters involved. A sidebar gives some details on the Shadows over Vathak setting.

Running this Adventure and Abbreviations explains what’s needed and how material is laid out.

The inhabitants of the inn are given an overview, with a sidebar describing a new drink, hypnotic ale.

The Inn Description covers the various locations.

Appendix 1 – NPCs gives stats for the NPCs.

Finally, there are two pages with colour maps of the inn.

The PDF lacks useful bookmarks and, though it is short, these would have been appreciated. Navigation could be better. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are a number of black and white illustrations, as well as the colour maps. Presentation is decent.

A Night at Wayside Inn is, for all intents and purposes, a tweaked version of Fat Goblin Travel Guide to Epiphany’s Wayside Inn. It has been adapted to 5th Edition, and in truth isn’t really tied to the Vathak setting. In fact, there are so few changes made that it’s odd that this supplement is listed as being by a different author. This inn can easily be dropped into any setting, in pretty much any location, and perhaps is only loosely horror, as the original supplement was never pushed as such.
