Urban Dressing: Sages

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Urban Dressing: Sages

Urban Dressing: Sages by Brian Fitzpatrick is a role playing game supplement published by Raging Swan Press for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as an 11-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $2.45 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. Two pages are the front and rear covers, two the front matter and Contents and one is the Open Game License. The PDF comes in two versions, one designed for print and high-end devices, the other for mobile and low-end devices.

Urban Dressing: SagesThe supplement is intended to provide sages for a setting, and consists of various options.

A: Characteristics & Appearance consists of two d100 tables, each with 50 results, one table for describing the exterior of the sage’s residence, the other the interior.

B: Whispers & Rumours is a d20 table of rumours about the sage.

C: Hooks, Complications & Opportunities consists of a d20 table of potential adventure hooks and a d6 table of why the sage might be unable to see the characters.

Sample Sages gives an overview of ten different sages. Each is given a name, alignment, class and level, appearance, personality, mannerisms and hooks.

Urban Dressing: Sages in Review

The PDF is well bookmarked with major and minor sections linked. The Contents only covers the major sections, but is hyperlinked. Navigation is good. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are a couple of pieces of black and white stock art. Presentation is okay.

The supplement does a decent job of describing various things related to the sages and where they live, but where it really lacks is describing what the sages themselves are interested in. There are no topics of study, with the niche speciality they might be fixated on, or unusual books they might own. Instead, they come across more like regular businesses, albeit ones that deal in knowledge. Urban Dressing: Sages is a fairly useful supplement albeit one that just doesn’t go far enough and it can be found by clicking here.
