A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Unterherz #2021

Unterherz #2021 is a role playing game supplement written and published by Kai Pütz a.k.a Gregorius21778 for use with Lamentations of the Flame Princess.

The supplement is available as a 29 wage PDF from DriveThruRPG for $2.50 but was purchased at a reduced price during a sale. The PDF comes in two versions, one full colour and one better for printing, and has 29 pages, with one being the front cover and one the front matter.

The opening paragraphs explain that this is a fan publication for Veins of the Earth and duplicates material from a blog.

Gunkhaven is a Funginid colony, and this gives some details on it and what the Funginids will trade for. There are 20 special mushrooms that characters can buy with different effects and the Sporeforecast is a d20 table with 17 results on what effect the spores in Gunkhaven can have on human beings.

Encounters & Obstacles in the Veins is a d6 table of random encounters.

Six Speleo Spells has six new spells designed with the underground in mind.

The Cradling Dream is something for characters to worship; Aelf-Adal hate worshippers of the Dream even more than any other dreamer and can sense when someone worships it.

Yitzchak, the Trader is an Aelf-Adal that trades in a variety of things. He has a cave filled with goods, which can be found by saying his name three times. The entrance appears shortly after that, but the character loses years from their lifespan. Details are given on what he trades – often not good for the person doing the trade – his stats and those for some guardian creatures and a d20 list of curses.

More Messing With the Gilgamash is a set of three d12 tables for generating such.

The White Tongue Cave & The Biting Oracle is a detailed complex that can be added to the Veins which includes the Biting Oracle who can give her services for a price.

Bailiff Nosgrev is a powerful magic-user and his stats, special possessions and some adventure hooks relating to him are given.

The Taker of Heads is a Trilobite-Knight that can be found wandering the Veins.

The Darkness Has Teeth has a new monster, the Teeth of the Darkness, that is only found in areas of special blackness.

The Tangleshadow Caves are a new area to explore that can be added to the Veins.

The final two pages of content are maps for the White Tongue Cave and Tangleshadow Caves.

Unterherz #2021 in Review

The PDF is bookmarked with major and minor sections linked. Navigation is decent. The text maintains a two-column format and some minor errors are noticed. There are a number of pieces of black and white and colour stock art. Presentation is decent.

This is a collection of a range of things all connected to the Veins of the Earth in some ways, but many of them are perfectly usable anywhere else as well, possibly with tweaking in some cases, but in others essentially as-is, making this a useful assortment of new material. As this is based on various blog posts, naturally the subject matter covers a wide range, so this is a mixture of different kinds of things rather than a coherent whole, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t useful.
