A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement This Unwholesome Thing

This Unwholesome Thing by Robert J Schwalb is a role playing game supplement published by Schwalb Entertainment for use with Shadow of the Demon Lord. This is part of the Unspeakable Things line.

The supplement is available as a two-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $0.99. About a quarter of a page is the Credits.

This Unwholesome ThingUnspeakable Things for Shadow of the Demon Lord talks about life in the Patchwork Lands and how bad the conditions are, with often human monsters being the worst ones to contend with. However, there are also strange things, monsters that sound like hybrids of multiple creatures, though of unknown origin, and this supplement has one of them.

The Exiled Wizard explains that the Black Magician, who was exiled from the Tower Arcane, arrived in the Patchwork Lands a year ago. In his laboratories, he created monsters made from two or more creatures in order to build an army. Those he rejected he set loose, then disappeared completely.

The Demodragon is one of those monsters. It’s an unholy fusion of demon and dragon, and is a difficulty 1,000 creature, meaning it is a climactic thing to fight. It’s stated to be such an existential threat to the peoples of the Patchwork Lands that they came together in order to deal with it, with all kinds mustering to fight against it.

The PDF lacks bookmarks and at this size doesn’t need them. Navigation is fine. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There is a single custom illustration of the Demodragon. Presentation is decent.

This supplement describes a single, extremely powerful monster. Interestingly, given the description of its behaviour and creation, and the time of this supplement’s release, it gives a definite impression that the evil wizard is Wizards of the Coast and the destructive monster is OGL 1.1. This Unwholesome Thing covers a single terrible monster, and possibly takes a dig at WotC, and can be found by clicking here.
