The Skein of the Blackbone Bride

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement The Skein of the Blackbone Bride

The Skein of the Blackbone Bride by Shanna Germain is a role playing game supplement published by Monte Cook Games for use with Numenera.

The supplement is available from DriveThruRPG as a 27-page PDF for $4.99 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. One page is the front cover and one is an ad.

The Skein of the Blackbone BrideBriefing Summary gives an overview of a mercenary group that has been hired to transport a woman’s daughter’s body back home for burial. The real daughter had been dead for years; this was an automaton fashioned as a replacement. The Synopsis gives an overview of the adventure.

The adventure itself takes place in and near the Black Riage range of mountains. The characters will head to the area and find the village where the automaton, the titular Blackstone Bride, was living. They will also discover that they are not the only ones after the daughter and that not everything is as it seems. Others after the body will come into conflict.

The final twelve pages of content are six pre-generated characters.

The Skein of the Blackbone Bride in Review

The PDF is well bookmarked with major and minor sections linked. Navigation is good. The text maintains a two columns with sidebar format and appeared to be free of errors. The sidebars are used for references, stats, GM Intrusions and other details. There are a number of colour and black and white illustrations, some of which appear to be custom. Presentation is good.

This adventure was designed to be run at a convention and there are various timing notes for the GM throughout to ensure that it is going on track; useful for those with limited time. However, the adventure has perhaps been tied a little too tightly to a convention theme, for it will need changes making in order to use it outside of a convention. This isn’t impossible, but either this will need to be a campaign starter or new adventure hooks will need creating. This makes it a little on the expensive side.
