The Silence of Space

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement The Silence of Space

The Silence of Space by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with the Cepheus Engine. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available from DriveThruRPG as a 20 page Pay What You Want PDF. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three pages are the front matter and three are the Open Game License.

The Silence of SpaceThe opening paragraphs explain that a star base has gone silent and the characters are asked to investigate. The star base is inside enemy territory, but has a cloaking device.

Game Master Notes explain that this is intended for the Frontiers of Space setting but could be placed elsewhere.

Complications explains that the cloaking device failed, the station was attacked and the cloaking device stolen.

The Olonseans gives details on the enemy power, with the ship and people they have to hand.

Tavilusia is a brief overview of the planet the base orbits.

Gamma-3492 Key has details of the various places on the station and who can be found there.

The Olonsean Empire gives some details on this; they are aggressive humanoids who, on reaching adulthood, put their brains into robotic frames.

The Ilsunsi Directorate gives some details on the characters’ employers; a highly advanced civilisation who are clearly Greys.

Cloaking Devices in the Frontiers of Space explains that such are beyond the technology of any of the races, although a few have them, recovered from an earlier civilisation.

The final three pages of content have maps of the star base.

The Silence of Space in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that they would have been appreciated. Navigation is poor. The text maintains a single column format and appeared to be free of errors. As well as the colour maps, there are a number of stock colour illustrations. Presentation is okay.

This is a simple enough adventure; characters have to travel to a space station, find out what happened, which will probably involve a lot of shooting, and avoid being destroyed by the enemy ship lurking nearby. Simple in execution, that is; it does have the potential to be rather dangerous as the characters go up against an aggressive, militaristic empire. If the characters are not at least a little cautious, they could end up in over their heads. The Silence of Space is a decent, albeit potentially lethal, little adventure and it can be found by clicking here.
