The Saucers are Coming!

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement The Saucers are Coming!

The Saucers are Coming! by John Alan Large is a role playing game supplement published by Red Dice Games for use with FATE. This is described as a Fate Thin, a mini campaign starter and will require either FATE Core or FATE Accelerated to use.

The supplement is available as a 14 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers and around half a page is links and credits.

The Introduction gives some background material about how inter-country cooperation turned out to be something else when the saucers arrived. A sidebar explains what Fate Thins are; they are based on the same concept as Fate World books.

The Saucers are Coming!Stages of the Invasion explains that the aliens followed a precise plan of attack. The stages can be played out in sequence or as standalone campaigns. Each stage has two Game aspects associated with it.

Stage 1: Arrival has the first alien infiltrators land. There’s a new Stunt, details on the infiltrators and the alien machines.

Stage 2: Infiltration has the aliens start to replace important people. Details are given on Men in Black.

Stage 3: Influence World Politics has world leaders replaced and starting to incite war. Details are given on Government Troopers, transports and armoured vehicles.

Stage 4: Main Assault has the aliens land their tripod war machines, stats of which are given along with their soldiers.

Stage 5: Control has the aliens in control and the noble aliens arrive. There is a new Stunt.

Conclusion wraps things up.

The Saucers are Coming! in Review

The PDF is bookmarked, though not usefully, with only the covers and start linked. Though this is short, better bookmarking would have been appreciated. Navigation could be better. The text maintains a single column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are a number of stock images used. Presentation is okay.

This is a mini campaign starter and will naturally require quite a bit more work to use. The basics of the campaign are given, along with new material, but the GM will need to actively develop adventures and other things for it. However, the supplement is exactly what it sets out to be; a brief outline for a campaign. The Saucers are Coming! can be found by clicking here.
