The Prop Room

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement The Prop Room

The Prop Room by William T. Thrasher is a generic role playing game supplement published by Skirmisher Publishing. The supplement contains instructions for making props for tabletop games and LARPs.

The supplement is available as an 18-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $1.99 although it was purchased at a reduced price due to a special offer. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three pages are the front matter and one page is ads.

The Prop RoomTreasure on the Cheap is on making treasure. Covered in this section are treasure chests, coins, gems and traps. Pre-made wooden chests, wooden discs or poker chips, polystyrene foam and representations are used for these, shaped, decorated and painted.

Adding Some Bite To Your Game is on making teeth using such as modelling clay, then shaping and painting them.

Grimdark Costume Enhancers states that, in the Middle Ages, fighting men would affix prayer strips to their armour with wax seals. This covers making medallions from polymer clay and parchment, which is then written on.

The Allure of Innsmouth Gold is on creating Innsmouth gold from metallic modelling clay.

Words Within Wheels has plans for making a simple code wheel.

The Prop Room in Review

The PDF is bookmarked with major sections linked, although not minor ones. Navigation is okay, but it could be better. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of error. There are a variety of illustrations, with the majority being colour photos of the props being made or them finished. The exception is for the code wheel, which has components to cut out and use. Presentation is good.

The supplement contains a variety of different props that can be used to enhance an ordinary game or, especially, a LARP. The amount of effort needed to make them varies from piece to piece, with some being more complex than others. None appear to be especially difficult to make, although some of the ones using modelling clay will likely need some practice. The Prop Room is a decent collection of instructions for making props at quite a low price and it can be found by clicking here.
