A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement The Little Horror House on the Prairie

The Little Horror House on the Prairie by Robert J. Schwalb is a role playing game supplement published by Schwalb Entertainment for use with Shadow of the Demon Lord. This is a short Expert adventure.

The supplement is available from DriveThruRPG as a two-page PDF for $0.69 but was purchased at a reduced price during a sale. About a sixth of a page is the Credits.

The Little Horror House on the PrairieThe opening paragraphs explain that a young man ran a foul cult and surrendered his soul to a demon. He later regretted his actions, fled the cult and the city for the country and his family. The demon would not release the man from his bargain and tormented him until he went insane. The demon is now looking for a fresh host. The characters are assumed to be travelling some place, possibly whilst being hunted, and spot a small, neglected house together with outbuildings.

Outside the house are various threats; poltergeists, animated corpses and small constructs. None of these are active during the day. There is also a living tar which attacks if disturbed.

The farmhouse is described next. There are several rooms, another construct, the demon and the former cultist – the latter has a spell reference to Occult Philosophy. There are also potential random encounters, but each can only occur once. The characters have to defeat and destroy several things to end the adventure.

The Little Horror House on the Prairie in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and with only two pages of content doesn’t need any. Navigation is fine. The text maintains a three-column full colour landscape format and appeared to be free of errors. There are no illustrations. Presentation is okay.

This is a small, essentially haunted house, adventure that characters could have on the way to something else. It’s not a long adventure and there are only a limited number of locations and monsters. That doesn’t mean it’s necessarily safe, though. The Little Horror House on the Prairie is a decent little adventure and it can be found by clicking here.
