The Haunting of Grimtallow Manor

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement The Haunting of Grimtallow Manor

The Haunting of Grimtallow Manor by Sarah Madsen is a role playing game supplement published by Wizards of the Coast through the DMs Guild Community Content Programme for use with Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition.

The supplement is available from DMs Guild as a 13-page PDF for $0.99 but was obtained at a reduced price thanks to a special offer. One page is the front cover.

The Haunting of Grimtallow ManorAbout This Adventure explains that this is a one-shot adventure for 4-6 characters of 4th level or higher, though adjustments may need to be made depending on a party’s composition. It explains that efforts were made to include stat blocks from different books, and there are references, with abbreviations, of various books it would be helpful to have. Read aloud text is explained and the location of the maps.

The Introduction explains that a gnomish arcane adept, Topher Frizzwinkel, had a wife who eventually succumbed to an illness, and a daughter who started to go the same way. When she died, the gnome bound his daughter’s soul in a gemstone and secured it in his house’s foundation. Topher died before he could restore his daughter, and recently gauth found the mansion and has been slowly devouring the daughter’s soul from its stone. Several Plot hooks are given to involve the characters.

The Mansion then describes the house itself. Resolution is what’s needed to complete the adventure, which is defeating the monster and freeing the souls of Topher and his daughter.

Appendix A has stats for the major NPCs; other stats are in the text.

Appendix B has black and white maps of the mansion, taking up four pages.

The Haunting of Grimtallow Manor in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and, though it isn’t that long, has enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation could be better. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. Bar the plain black and white maps and the cover, there are no illustrations. Presentation is adequate.

This is an adventure that’s simple enough to drop into most settings, as it’s just a single house. It’s also an easy enough short adventure, given that it’s contained in a single location. Essentially, it’s a standard haunted house with some twists. The Haunting of Grimtallow Manor is a really cheap adventure and it can be found by clicking here.
