The Green Book of Murthock

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement The Green Book of Murthock

The Green Book of Murthock is a role playing game supplement published by DRAKAT Games. The supplement is intended to be used in games based on the Cthulhu Mythos, in particular Call of Cthulhu. This is a single Mythos tome, although it is available in several different versions.

This is a sixteen page PDF that is available from RPGNow for $1 but which was purchased at the reduced price of $0.67. One page is the front cover, one the front matter and Contents and one is an ad for other supplements.

The Green Book of MurthockThe two page Foreword gives a history of the Mythos tome called the Green Book of Murthock, including both earlier and later editions with different names. The first edition was written in 870 AD; the last a commentary from the first decade of the 20th century.

The next five pages have sample pages from four different editions of the book and a cover. One is in Darkic, a runic language from DRAKAT Games, one in Latin and two in English. Each page is done in a different style.

There are two pages on About the books. These give Call of Cthulhu game stats for the four different editions.

Next is Ideas for further books. This is similar to the previous section, and gives game stats for three more books, all early, and supposedly lost, editions.

About the spells has some rules on spells if not using Call of Cthulhu as well as nine spells, all but one of which can be found in the Call of Cthulhu rules.

The Green Book of Murthock in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and, although not necessary, they would have been appreciated. The text maintains a single column format and appeared to be free of errors. The only things that could be considered to be illustrations are the sample pages and book cover, but these are a nice addition.

This is essentially a single Mythos tome, as is typical for the game, but one that is very, very detailed. Rather than a brief, or even a comparatively detailed, overview of the book, its full history, different editions and even samples are gone into. For the amount of content, even at full price this is decent value for money. The Green Book of Murthock is a nice addition to any Mythos-based game and it can be found by clicking here.
