The Fight for the Forest

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement The Fight for the Forest

The Fight for the Forest by Stew Shearer is a role playing game supplement published by Gorgon’s Breath Games. This is an adventure for 2nd level characters for the Dungeons & Dragons game, probably 5E. The supplement is published under the Open Game License and, as a result, some of it is considered to be Open Game Content.

This is a fifteen page PDF that is available from RPGNow as a Pay What You Want supplement. One page is the front cover, two the front matter and one the Open Game License.

The opening couple of paragraphs give the setting assumptions – the adventure is set in a woodcutting community named Timber – and that this can be inserted into another game world easily, and that the characters are stopping in the inn in the village.

The Fight for the ForestThe first encounter has the characters woken up in the middle of the night, as a fire has broken out at the sawmill. They can attempt to help deal with this and, in the process, discover that it was set deliberately by squirrel-like humanoids called Nutabers.

Hired to deal with the Nutabers, the characters then go into the neighbouring forest. There are a few encounters in the forest, and how they go depends on the behaviour of the characters. The characters can attempt to find out what is actually going on, or they can simply attempt to eradicate the Nutabers.

The final page is a new monster, the Nutaber.

The PDF lacks bookmarks and, despite its comparatively short length, these would have been appreciated. Navigation is below average. The text maintains a two column format and no errors were noticed. There is a single colour illustration and several colour maps; presentation is decent for a short supplement.

This adventure can turn out in different ways, depending on the characters. If the characters are willing to talk, they might be able to settle the situation peacefully. This is not as easy as it could be, as one influential NPC has no interest in this happening, and evidence is needed. The characters may simply decide to slaughter all the Nutabers. The characters may also want to solve things peacefully, but fail to get the Nutabers to cooperate. There are therefore a number of different ways this short adventure can turn out.

The Fight for the Forest is an interesting adventure that can turn out in a number of different ways depending on how characters behave, and it can be checked out for free by clicking here.
