A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement The Cantrip Cantina: Holiday Libations

The Cantrip Cantina: Holiday Libations by Jess Pendley and Keith Pendley is a role playing game supplement published by Underground Oracle Publishing for use with Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a four page Pay What You Want supplement from DriveThruRPG. One page is Special Thanks and one page is the Open Game License.

The Cantrip Cantina: Holiday LibationsThe introductory text explains that there are new holiday drinks and some new cantrips as well as a feat. A box explains that the titular cantina is detailed in another supplement, Downtime Destinations: The Cantrip Cantina.

First there are three festive cantrips. One bolsters a target’s spirits, briefly giving them temporary hit points and advantage on an attack roll. The next makes a target creature briefly immune to the frightened condition. The final one makes the target take cold damage and gives them disadvantage on an attack roll.

The new feat increases Intelligence and the effectiveness of cantrips.

Finally, there are three new drinks. One allows the casting of dancing lights, another gives an advantage on saves versus cold damage and the final one gives advantage on saving throws versus fear effects.

The Cantrip Cantina: Holiday Libations in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and, with only two pages having content, doesn’t need them. The text maintains a two-column colour format and appeared to be free of error. There are a couple of colour illustrations, one of which is duplicated from the earlier supplement. Presentation is decent.

Though this is an expansion on the material in The Cantrip Cantina, that supplement is not required to use this one. The feats, cantrips and drinks can easily be dropped into any setting without using the cantina. Truthfully, the content in the original supplement felt a bit sparse and in need of expansion; it’s a bit of a shame that the expansion is in a separate supplement. The Cantrip Cantina: Holiday Libations is a decent collection of cantrips and drinks, although the holiday theme may not be particularly strong, and it can be found by clicking here.
