The Breaking of Forstor Nagar (PFRPG)

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement The Breaking of Forstor Nagar (PFRPG)

The Breaking of Forstor Nagar (PFRPG) by Ben McFarland is a role playing game supplement published by Rite Publishing for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result. This is an adventure for 8th level characters and is also available in versions for 13th Age and Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition.

The supplement is available as a 48-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $9.99 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. Two pages are the front and rear covers, one is the Contents and front matter and one the Open Game License. The supplement also comes with a zip file containing files designed for use with MapTool.

Adventure Background explains that Forstor Nagar is dying, slowly and surely being conquered by the Hungering Legion, a cannibalistic mercenary company who only eat what they’ve killed.

Adventure Summary gives an outline of the adventure, from the characters’ arrival to their fleeing the city.

The Breaking of Forstor Nagar (PFRPG)The Hungering Legion gives some details on this, though their specific origin isn’t definitely stated; there are some suggestions. They are all human, and the reason is this makes them harder to demonise. They may be insane, but they are also stable; they are really good at what they do. How the Hungering template is applied, why the Legion is attacking the city and the origins of the dragon oracle are also in this section.

Next are some Hooks to get characters involved.

The various parts of the adventure follow; each is essentially an encounter and follows a generally similar format, with setup, maps and environment as well as other details such as scaling instructions.

Part 1: A Bridge Over… has the characters arrive at the city’s gates as the Hungering Legion is attacking that entrance. They will need to get inside the city. A sidebar mentions that most of the city’s buildings are made of ice.

Part 2: Into the City has the characters inside the city itself now; the environment, given the sheer amount of ice around, is not exactly habitable for the unprotected or unprepared.

Part 3: A Fleeting Paradise is an encounter with an escaped monster.

Part 4: Knock, Knock has the characters attempting to get to the defenders.

Part 5: The Diplomatic Compound has the characters meeting the primary NPC for the adventure.

Part 6: Flight into Ruin has the characters leaving the compound.

Part 7: Safe Passage is an encounter with some rhino knights.

Part 8: The Oracle of Forstor Nagar is the final encounter with the oracle, a rather unhappy dragon.

Part 9: Escape from the Grinding Ice is the escape from the city.

Conclusion wraps things up, depending how it went.

Appendix has new items, a new template and pre-generated characters.

The Breaking of Forstor Nagar (PFRPG) in Review

The PDF is bookmarked with major sections linked. The Contents is to a similar level of depth and is hyperlinked. Navigation is decent. The text maintains a two-column colour format and the primary error noted was an NPC who was present in two different locations when they couldn’t have been. There are a lot of colour maps, as befits an adventure designed to be run on a VTT, colour illustrations, some of which may be custom, and colour tokens duplicated in the supplement. Presentation is good.

The adventure is basically a series of mapped encounters at different places, but there are different ways events could go, and the introduction to following encounters covers how to handle the encounter depending on what previously happened. Characters could enter into an encounter already trusted, or still treated as a potential threat, depending on their prior actions. This does make the adventure feel less linear than it is. Overall, this is a nicely put together adventure with extensive details on each encounter. The Breaking of Forstor Nagar (PFRPG) can be found by clicking here.
