So What's The Mount Like, Anyway?

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement So What’s The Mount Like, Anyway?

So What’s The Mount Like, Anyway? by Mike Welham is a role playing game supplement published by Raging Swan Press for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 24-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $3.99 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three the front matter, Contents and Foreword, one page is an ad and one is the Open Game License. The PDF comes in two versions, one designed for print and high-end devices, the other for mobile and low-end devices.

So What's The Mount Like, Anyway? The Foreword explains that mounts, meaning horses and similar, are often treated as little more than disposable equipment and this supplement is intended to make them more interesting.

Table A: Mount’s Appearance is a d100 list describing the mount and how it looks.

Table B: Mount’s Traits is a d100 list with 98 results, the last two being roll multiple times, each of which has a trait with a short description, some of which have game effects.

Table C: Hooks and Complications is a d20 table with various things that can be used as adventure hooks.

Noteworthy Barding is a d100 list with different kinds of barding, arranged by price and descriptions for them, with a glossary at the end.

Warhorses has a d20 list of names plus stats for three types of horse.

War Ponies is similar, with another d20 table of names and stats for three different types.

Riding Dogs again follows the same layout.

Exotic Mounts has details on equipment for exotic mounts, land-based mounts, flying mounts, details on intelligent mounts and on exotic mounts in society.

Glossary of Terms explains what a number of terms used in the supplement mean.

So What’s The Mount Like, Anyway? In Review

The PDF is bookmarked with major and minor sections linked. The Contents is to less depth and is hyperlinked. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are a number of appropriate stock black and white illustrations, up to full page in size. Presentation is decent.

This supplement is very useful for anyone wanting to make mounts more interesting, whether these be for characters for whom mounts are important, such as cavaliers, or players who want to make their mounts more interesting. It can also be used to flesh out NPC mounts. So What’s The Mount Like, Anyway? is a good supplement for making mounts more interesting and it can be found by clicking here.
