A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement So What’s the Hoard Like, Anyway?

So What’s the Hoard Like, Anyway? by Thomas King and Chad Perrin is a role playing game supplement published by Raging Swan Press for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 21-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $3.99 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three the front matter, Contents and Foreword, one page is an ad and one is the Open Game License. The PDF comes in two versions, one designed for print and high-end devices, the other for mobile and low-end devices.

So What's the Hoard Like, Anyway? The Foreword explains that the most basic level of role playing games is killing monsters and taking their stuff and that this supplement contains an assortment of treasure hoards to drop into a game. This is followed by some rules for how to identify treasure, both magical and mundane.

The rest of the supplement is taken up by the treasures hoards. These are separated into seven different levels, each of which has 12 hoards to randomly roll on a table, with the worth of the hoard given on the table. The different hoards are then individually described, with coinage, if present, and then individual items of value. These individual items range from more ordinary items, such as gems and jewellery, to more unusual items of worth, to magic items.

The PDF is bookmarked with major and minor sections linked. The Contents is not as thorough but is hyperlinked. Navigation is good. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be almost free of errors. There are a number of stock black and white illustrations. Presentation is decent.

The supplement makes the individual hoards more interesting, with descriptions of individual items, rather than just their value, making this a more evocative supplement. There’s also a wide range of hoards to pick from, too, and it’s interesting that some lack the traditional coins. So What’s the Hoard Like, Anyway? is a good little supplement and it can be found by clicking here.
