A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Sidebar #6 – 5 Haunted Items

Sidebar #6 – 5 Haunted Items by Taylor Huber is a role playing game supplement published by Fat Goblin Games for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

This is a four-page PDF that is available from DriveThruRPG. One page is the front cover and front matter and one the Open Game License.

The opening paragraph states that there are items haunted by the dead, evil and powerful curses, and that some of this are frightening and others dangerous. The haunts in the supplement are inspired by real life haunted objects.

Sidebar #6 - 5 Haunted ItemsThe first is the Royal Blood Diamond, which belonged to a foreign princess who another had killed out of lust for the diamond. When a wearer attempts a Diplomacy check, the diamond turns red and acts as a symbol of fear.

The Busty Maid Stool is from a tavern and was used in the execution of a highwayman. Those who sit in it are attacked by a phantasmal killer.

The Hardnook Plantation Mirror reflected the deaths of the Hardnooks and afflicts those who looks in it with suffocation.

The Willow’s Doll is a haunted doll that will cause fear for its owners.

The painter of Sir Vincent’s Portrait was killed by the subject when he refused to alter it and will set those in the area on fire.

The PDF has bookmarks, but they are both scrambled and not needed, given the length. Navigation is fine. The PDF follows a two-column colour format and the only noticeable error was that part of the Open Game License – the first line – was on the previous page. There is a single illustration on the cover.

This is a decent collection of haunts and, unlike many such, the conditions for destroying them are not as obscurely impossible as they could be; perhaps a benefit. They have a variety of CRs but are also not as lethal as some. Sidebar #6 – 5 Haunted Items is a collection of decent, albeit not exceptional, haunted items, and can be picked up quite inexpensively by clicking here.
