Shadowsfall: The Temple of Orcus (PFRPG)

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Shadowsfall: The Temple of Orcus (PFRPG)

Shadowsfall: The Temple of Orcus (PFRPG) by Dale C. McCoy Jr. is a role playing game supplement published by Jon Brazer Enterprises for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result. This is an adventure for 5th level characters and uses monsters from Book of Beasts: Monsters of the Shadow Plane. Shadowsfall is a series of supplements on the Plane of Shadow.

The supplement is available as a PDF from DriveThruRPG for $2.95, as a softcover print on demand book for $10 or as both softcover and PDF for $12. The PDF is the version reviewed, although it was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle, and has 18 pages. Two pages are the front and rear covers, one page the front matter and one is ads and the Open Game License. The PDF also comes with files for Hero Lab.

Shadowsfall: The Temple of Orcus (PFRPG)The first page of content is simply some setting fluff.

The Adventure Background explains that a priest was reanimated on Shadowsfall and decided he owed that to Orcus, and has been animating zombies and restoring a temple. In order to finish the temple, the priest needs a living sacrifice to desecrate it, and kidnapped a mother and her three children. The Adventure Summary explains how the adventure should unfold.

The characters will be asked by a man to go looking for his wife and children. They will encounter zombies and a portal to Shadowsfall. They will need to travel through the portal, find the temple and rescue those kidnapped.

Introduction to Shadowsfall is a single page that gives an overview of the setting.

Finally, there are four pre-generated characters to use.

Shadowsfall: The Temple of Orcus (PFRPG) in Review

The PDF is very thoroughly bookmarked, with major and minor sections linked. Navigation is very good. The text maintains a two-column black and white format and appeared to be free of errors. There are a number of illustrations, which appear to be custom, as well as maps of Shadowsfall where the temple is and the temple itself. Presentation is good.

The addition of Hero Lab files adds utility to this adventure. Though it is set on the Plane of Shadow, it starts on the normal plane and returns there. It could therefore be used as an introductory adventure to exploring a new plane of existence. The adventure itself is a straightforward rescue mission; the location is more unusual though. Shadowsfall: The Temple of Orcus (PFRPG) is a decent little adventure and it can be found by clicking here.
