A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Rewarding Rumors

Rewarding Rumors by Chris Markham is a role playing game supplement published by Edge Studios via the Genesys Foundry Community Content Programme for use with Genesys and Terrinoth.

Rewarding RumorsThe supplement is available as an 18-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $2.99 but was purchased at a reduced price during a sale. One page is the front cover, one the front matter, about half the Table of Contents and one is ads.

The Introduction explains what’s needed and that this is a supplement with 14 different rumours inspired by the Rumors used in the 1st Edition of the Descent boardgame, explaining how those were used. These rumours are said to be good for short sessions such as one-shots or introductory adventures and they are scalable.

The rumours follow, one to a page. Each has a name and introductory paragraph, followed by some narrative that can be read aloud. All also have a Location, which explains where the adventure can be placed, Obstacles that can cause problems, the Object of the Quest and the Catch. Other options depend on the rumour, such as Assistance, Reward or details unique to the rumour. The rumours themselves cover a variety of things, from dealing with spirits to finding items to recovering treasure.

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. The Table of Contents covers the major sections. Navigation could be better. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are a number of black and white stock illustrations. Presentation is decent.

These rumours are more fleshed out than a simple piece of gossip that could be overheard in the tavern but not as much as a full adventure. There are the bones of what’s needed, but the GM will need to put a bit of flesh on them and, in some cases, perhaps find a map. The rumours are not quite ready to be run as is, so they will either need some prepping before being run or an ability to add stuff on the fly. This is a decent collection of in-depth adventure hooks. Rewarding Rumors can be found by clicking here.
