A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Redemption

Redemption by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with Cepheus Engine. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 26 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three the front matter and three the Open Game License.

RedemptionThe characters are hired by an operative of the Olonsean Naval Intelligence Service who wants them to recover a general who has either been captured by the Ilsunsi Directorate or turned by them; though not stated, the adventure is set in the Frontiers of Space. They are also offered the use of five prisoners with useful skills from a penal colony. The adventure may also be played by one player and the GM, possibly because of this.

Patron gives details on the patron.

The General gives details on the person to recover.

Complications are things that are not known or can go wrong; perhaps unsurprisingly, the prisoners who may helping are not the best sort of people.

The Roster of Prisoners gives stats and details on the prisoners, their skills and their crimes, as well as a collar each is fitted with used to punish or kill them.

In the Alternative briefly looks at the characters not using the prisoners.

The Manor House details the locations in the place where the general is being kept.

Guard Roster has stats for guards.

Canine Patrols has stats and details on the Ilsunsi Bloodhounds that are used.

Vehicle Patrols covers these.

Security Cards are what’s needed to gain access to various areas.

General Ty’tik gives his potential reactions when he is found.

Mission Completion is what’s needed to succeed.

The final two pages of content have labelled maps of the manor.

Redemption in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation could be better. The text maintains a single column format and appeared to be free of errors. Bar the map and covers, there are no illustrations. Presentation is adequate.

As is common with these supplements, the guards are covered in more detail than needed; two or three stat blocks would have sufficed. This is an infiltration mission, where an outright assault may well go badly. The addition of the prisoners does add skills, mean less characters are needed and add some potential danger from the prisoners themselves. The general himself may or may not cause problems.
