Rappan Athuk Player's Guide

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Rappan Athuk Player’s Guide

Rappan Athuk Player’s Guide by Viki Potter is a role playing game supplement published by Frog God Games. The supplement is intended to complement Rappan Athuk and is system neutral.

The supplement is available as a 16-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $4.99 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. One page is the front cover and one the front matter.

Rappan Athuk Player's GuideA Guide to the Player’s Guide explains that the book is intended to immerse the player in the world of Rappan Athuk and make Zelkor’s Ferry into a place occupied by people, not just stats. In addition, nothing in this book is set in stone; anything stated may be different to how a particular GM’s world is setup, though there are tips.

The rest of the supplement is essentially prose. The characters go from place to place in Zelkor’s Ferry. In some places, they will also be able to speak to adventurers who got out of the dungeon with their lives, although not always with their health and frequently without at least a few comrades.

This prose describes several places in Zelkor’s Ferry, as well as the people who live and work in them, as well as giving tips about what to take into the dungeon and what to do, or not to do, once inside. Each person spoken to talks about a different location, some of them on the surface, and there are a few pencil maps of the areas they are talking about.

Rappan Athuk Player’s Guide in Review

The PDF is well bookmarked, with what appears to be all sections linked. Navigation is good. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. The only illustrations are the aforementioned maps. Presentation is okay.

This supplement is what it sounds like; it’s something to give to players for them to read. It should definitely not be used as read-aloud text, given that would be the entire supplement. Players can, by reading this, get the sort of knowledge of Zelkor’s Ferry, and some former explorers of Rappan Athuk, that they would get by wandering around chatting to people, but without having to roll or roleplay for it. There are no stats so this is suitable for any system used for the dungeon. Rappan Athuk Player’s Guide is a useful piece of fluff to give to players and it can be found by clicking here.
