Rappan Athuk: Level 5D: How Green Was My Dungeon

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Rappan Athuk: Level 5D: How Green Was My Dungeon

Rappan Athuk: Level 5D: How Green Was My Dungeon by Bill Webb & Tom Knauss is a role playing game supplement published by Frog God Games for use with Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available from the Frog God Games store as a 14-page PDF for $7.99 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. Two pages are the front and rear covers, one the front matter, one an ad, one the Table of Contents and about two thirds of a page the Open Game License.

This is, as the names suggests, an expansion for Rappan Athuk, a small, self-contained dungeon region. Its precise position on Level 5 of the dungeon is not given; a GM could place the hidden entrance where wished.

Rappan Athuk: Level 5D: How Green Was My DungeonThe dungeon was created when followers of the Green Father fled inside the dungeon from Tsathogga and that deity’s followers, creating a small area within where they could follow their own deity. This eventually came undone when worshippers of Tsathogga unleashed a forest child which found its way in and devoured almost everything.

Like other levels of the dungeon, this one has a sidebar giving its general features and wandering monsters. Almost everything inside is undead or tainted in some way, though there is a highly unusual group of allies the characters could make with a bit of effort who can provide help.

There are two full page maps of the mini-dungeon, one labelled, one not.

Rappan Athuk: Level 5D: How Green Was My Dungeon in Review

The PDF is well bookmarked with major and minor sections linked. The Table of Contents, however, only covers the two main sections. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. Bar the maps, there is one colour illustration which doesn’t appear to be custom. Presentation is okay.

The biggest comfort detriment to using this supplement is stat blocks; there aren’t any apart from the forest child. Now, this isn’t unheard of for two-page adventures, where they save space, but this isn’t a two-page adventure. The creatures inside come from Tome of Beasts, Monster Manual, Tome of Blighted Horrors, Tome of Horrors and Fifth Edition Foes; fortunately, these appear to be listed on the 5ESRD site or this adventure would be impossible to run without a substantial collection of monster books. Given the supplement’s price, expecting such stat blocks to be in it does not seem unreasonable.

Rappan Athuk: Level 5D: How Green Was My Dungeon does add an expansion to the megadungeon, and one that could easily be used in other places as well, or even as a separate dungeon, but it is really expensive at full price for what it contains.
