Past is Prologue

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Past is Prologue

Past is Prologue by Charlie Cantrell is a role playing game supplement published by White Wolf through the Storytellers Vault Community Content Programme. This is a supplement for Dark Ages: Fae, though it is stated that the historical information may be of use for Changeling: The Dreaming 20th Anniversary Edition.

The supplement is available as a 16-page PDF from Storytellers Vault for $3.99 but was received for free thanks to a special discount. One page is the front cover, two the front matter, one the Table of Contents and one is an ad.

Past is PrologueThere is an introductory page about the dark and what the supplement contains. Next is a page of fiction.

A Forgotten Conflict explains that the fae know they have an incomplete knowledge of their history, but not why. It explains that the firstborn have forgotten that they weren’t the first to emerge from the Mists; that was the neverborn. It gives details on the Weaving War against the White, Red and Green Courts, the Silver Oaths and how they imprison the neverborn.

Origin: Dark is a new origin. It starts with an overview of what this origin grants, then covers the three courts. Each court is given a description, the location of its prison, their mien and their echoes.

Dominion of Nightmare is a new domain. It has a range of cantrips from Level One to Level Five, details on Unleashing Nightmare and botches for the domain, together with difficulty adjustment bonuses.

The PDF is bookmarked, but only has the three major sections linked. The Table of Contents is to the same level of depth and is hyperlinked. Navigation is okay. The text is either one or two column layout and appeared to be free of errors. There are a number of black and white illustrations, up to full page in size. Presentation is decent.

This supplement is exactly what it sets out to be. It has a new fae origin, three courts to add depth and a new domain with a good number of cantrips. This is accompanied by some historical information for the new origin and how it relates to the others. Past is Prologue is a decent supplement, though perhaps a little pricy, and it can be found by clicking here.
