On the Plane of Magma (An Adventure for 5E)

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement On the Plane of Magma (An Adventure for 5E)

On the Plane of Magma (An Adventure for 5E) is a role playing game supplement published by Skirmisher Publishing for use with Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result. The adventure is also included in At the Shrine of Othrys.

On the Plane of Magma (An Adventure for 5E)The supplement is available as a 12-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $1.99 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. Two pages are the front and rear covers, one the front matter, one the Open Game License and one is an ad. There is also a jpg map of the encounter.

On the Plane of Magma explains that it is intended to tie in with At the Shrine of Othrys and represents a spot that the characters might be transported to for a number of suggested reasons. It is intended to be played through in one session and the goal is to return to the Material Plane. The adventure is in a notably hostile environment – it is the Plane of Magma, after all, though a comparatively hospitable part – but those immune to fire damage can survive indefinitely. The characters need to make their way through so that they can escape. There are also two new monsters.

Two pages are taken up by the map that is available as the jpg. Part of the map is large squares, whilst other parts have a second square grid as well, one half the size of the first, but this grid doesn’t match with the larger one.

The PDF is bookmarked with the major sections linked. Given the length, navigation is okay. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are a number of colour illustrations. Presentation is okay.

Though this is included in a larger campaign, it functions well as a one-shot. All that’s needed is a reason to send the characters to the Plane of Magma, and even some of the suggested ones for the campaign could be adapted, and then they will have to work out a way of getting away again. This does have the potential to be extremely dangerous for characters who aren’t fire resistant, though. On the Plane of Magma (An Adventure for 5E) can be found by clicking here.
