Nightfall

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Nightfall

Nightfall by Trevor Armstrong is a role playing game supplement published by Wizards of the Coast through the DMs Guild Community Content Programme. This is an adventure for 4-6 players of levels 8-10 for use with Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition.

The supplement is available from DMs Guild for $1.95 but was received for free due to a special offer. The supplement consists of a 19-page PDF and a zip file. Two pages of the PDF are the front and rear covers, one the front matter and one the Credits. The zip file contains 11 images; these are various images to be used as handouts for player as well as maps. There are five versions of the same map. One is the DM’s map and the other four are lit and unlit versions of the map, with or without a grid. It is also available in a version for Fantasy Grounds.

NightfallThe Preamble explains that a vampire has taken over a once-pleasant graveyard and made it a far darker place. People who worked and visited there have disappeared and so have adventurers the locals have asked to look. The characters are passing by and are in a tavern when they are approached to see if they can help. The locals do not know the true nature of the problem, only that there is one.

A copy of the DMs Map follows with some notes as to what happens at three locations.

Beginning the Adventure has the characters walking a few hours to get to the graveyard (it is ten miles outside of Secomber) with a map of what the characters will be able to see when they enter. Inside the graveyard, the characters will need to deal with undead, an oak tree that has been corrupted and is raising the dead and a vampire who has linked herself to two flesh golems who take damage before she does.

Appendix A is five pages and contains NPC stat blocks.

The PDF lacks bookmarks and, although comparatively short, is long enough that these would have been helpful. Navigation could be better. The text maintains a two-column colour layout and appeared to be free of error. There are a number of predominately colour stock images and photos related to the monsters and graveyards. These are reproduced in the images, which is useful. Presentation is decent.

Scattered through the adventure are a number of suggestions as to how to integrate the adventure into a DM’s own campaign. This doesn’t require much doing; in fact, the easiest way is to simply drop it into a suitable location unchanged, but the suggestions do give a few more options.

There aren’t that many encounters, but the vampire could prove trickier than expected, given that she is shuffling the damage away to a couple of golems. If players don’t realise that, she will be able to soak quite a bit before getting hurt. Nightfall is a decent little adventure and it can be found by clicking here.
