Morvrin

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Morvrin

Morvrin by N. Robin Crossby and John Sgammato is a role playing game supplement published by Columbia Games Inc. for use with Hârn and HârnMaster. This is a bestiary article.

The supplement is available as a six-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $2.99 but was purchased at a reduced price during a sale.

MorvrinThe opening paragraph explains that that anyone can lose their soul to Bukrai and the servants of Bukrai are soul predators called amorvrin and their undead slaves gulmorvrin. Undeath is made possible by the Shadow of Bukrai.

The Shadow of Bukrai explains this is a phenomenon that surrounds some artefacts sacred to Morgath and his undead minions. It is the basis of existence for amorvrin and gulmorvrin.

The Army of Chaos explains that morvrin are created by the Morgathian Order of the Lord of Chaos, and their goal is to create an enormous undead army. Amorvrin must be created from a living body; gulmorvrin can be created from a fresh corpse. The Shadow slows aging and decomposition and morvrin can survive for hundreds of years. Gulmorvrin have no intelligence or will and need a ritual to command them. There are details on slaying morvrin; amorvrin, once slain, can reform in their resting place. A sidebar explains the game details for the Shadow and has a ritual for confining it.

Amorvrin, the Gray Undead, provides the details for this creature. Myrvia the Temptress bargains with mortals, tempting them to become one. This provides details on becoming one, their attributes, resting places where they reform and how they generally avoid combat. Sidebars provide relevant game details.

Gulmorvrin, Warriors of Klyss, again provides details on these. These are unintelligent and used in combat, so battle with them is much more likely. A sidebar provides game stats.

Dalkeshi Gulmora, the Bukrai Mummy, provides information on this essentially subtype of gulmorvrin, as how they are made varies from area to area. A sidebar has game stats.

Morvrin in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is short enough that these aren’t needed. Navigation is okay. The text is either two column or single column with sidebar format and appeared to be free of errors. There are a number of colour and black and white images. Presentation is decent.

With this being a bestiary supplement, it has more HârnMaster stats than many Hârn supplements, so it’s less useful with other systems, and this one in particular has a lot more system-related material. The undead described are a bit different, for though there aren’t the range seen in some systems, there’s a complex background to how they’re made and why. These aren’t undead that simply sprout into existence for no real reason; there’s a plan behind their creation. Morvrin is an interesting supplement and it can be found by clicking here.
