A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Monster of the Week – The Lump Hag

Monster of the Week – The Lump Hag by Daron Woodson is a role playing game supplement published by Abandoned Arts and Fat Goblin Games for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a five-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $1 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. One page is the front cover and one the Open Game License.

Monster of the Week - The Lump HagThe Monster of the Week explains that the line takes its inspiration from the television trope where a new creature is encountered every week, and this entry is for a hag with tragic origins, and one that is suited for horror themed adventures.

The creature is then described, a CR 7 hag. The hag is covered in spiders and, when killed, the lump on their back explodes sending spiders everywhere. The details of the lump hag explain that hags often use their abilities to have offspring with human men. These changeling girls eventually get a call to meet their mother, and may then become hags themselves, or alternatively become foes of such. However, those changelings whose mothers die before this meeting find nothing on their quest, or perhaps their progenitor’s grave. The call never ends, and this drives the changeling mad, with their physical form changing to suit. The lump hag then repels all but spiders. Occasionally, a trio of lump hags may form a coven.

Monster of the Week – The Lump Hag in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is short enough that these are not needed. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a two-column format and seemed to be free of errors. There is a single colour illustration, of the lump hag. Presentation is okay.

The lump hag isn’t the most dangerous creature around, though they are certainly not a pushover. They’re also much more likely to be encountered without any other creatures around, except for their spiders, making them less dangerous than other hags who are more likely to band with others. The lump hag makes a dangerous solitary creature for lower levels, but less so for more experienced parties. Monster of the Week – The Lump Hag is a decent monster and can be found by clicking here.
