A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Mini Quest Z: The Hollowing of Greyhaven

Mini Quest Z: The Hollowing of Greyhaven by David Dudka is a role playing game supplement published by Survive RPG. The supplement is an adventure that is part of the Mini Quests series and is intended for use with Dungeons & Dragons based games although no particular version is specified.

This is a three page Pay What You Want PDF that is available from RPGNow. Around a third of a page is ads for other supplements.

The addition of “Z” in the title does not initially make sense, at least until the adventure is actually read. The “Z” is for zombies, for this is a zombie apocalypse scenario.

Mini Quest Z: The Hollowing of GreyhavenThe characters are in the city of Greyhaven staying in an inn when, during the night, they are woken up by screams. On going out of their room they are attacked a zombie, and these are the infected type of zombie; disease from bites can eventually kill those bitten, unless the disease is treated, and those who die from the bites rise as zombies themselves.

There is a map of the city of Greyhaven with thirteen different encounters marked on it. Escape is not possible through either gate; one is on fire and the other is blocked from the outside to prevent the infection spreading. The characters must travel through the city, having various encounters, until they find out what caused the zombie plague and put a stop to it.

The PDF lacks bookmarks and, at three pages, does not really need them. The text maintains a two column format and a number of minor errors were noticed. As well as the map of the city, there are various black and white illustrations, all of which appear to be custom. Presentation is good for a short supplement.

The handling of infected-type zombies is done quite well; they are a genuine threat and can easily spread the disease. There are a number of interesting and potentially threatening encounters too.

The downsides of the adventure. No character levels are specified; the zombies are more dangerous than normal and will likely require higher level characters to defeat them. If the characters are too powerful they will mow through the zombies quite easily. The events themselves, despite being in different locations, are fairly linear – which doesn’t mean that characters can’t skip ahead, if they think logically, and avoid around half of the planned encounters. Characters who do think things through will probably head to the most sensible location and then to the final encounter, shortening the adventure greatly.

Mini Quest Z: The Hollowing of Greyhaven is, despite a few flaws, not a bad fantasy zombie apocalypse adventure and it can be checked out for free by clicking here.
