Mini Quest: Trials of the Spider Witch

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Mini Quest: Trials of the Spider Witch

Mini Quest: Trials of the Spider Witch by David Dudka is a role playing game supplement published by Survive RPG for use with Dungeons & Dragons based systems, although no specific edition is given. This is part of the Mini Quest series of short adventures.

This is an eight page PDF which is available as a Pay What You Want supplement from RPGNow.

Mini Quest: Trials of the Spider WitchIt starts off with the characters being hired by the agent of a local baron. The agent gives them some background information regarding a tower and bridge that came under attack by barbarian mercenaries during a war. The attackers were defeated but shortly afterwards all the inhabitants of the tower were lost to a darkness from the chasm the bridge was built over. The characters are being hired to discover the fate of those who were in the tower.

The adventure is in two parts. The first part involves exploring the tower, which is still inhabited but not by anything friendly. The final area of the tower should see the characters on the verge of being overwhelmed by shadows only to be “rescued” by dark elves.

The second part of the adventure is the actual trials. There are a number of puzzles and monsters, culminating in meeting the spider witch and the final trial.

Mini Quest: Trials of the Spider Witch in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and being short doesn’t really need them although they would have been appreciated. The text largely maintains a two column format and a few minor errors were noticed. There are a number of custom black and white illustrations and maps; presentation is good for a short supplement.

As is quite common in this series, no indication is given as to what level this adventure is aimed at. This definitely needs deciding before playing it, as there is at least one encounter where the characters are supposed to be overwhelmed. If they aren’t, some minor tweaking will be required.

The adventure is definitely in two parts, one of exploring a ruin and one of dealing with various puzzles in an underground complex.

Mini Quest: Trials of the Spider Witch is, despite any minor quibbles, a decent short adventure and it can be checked out for free by clicking here.
