Mini Quest: Trail of the Giant

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Mini Quest: Trail of the Giant

Mini Quest: Trail of the Giant by David Dudka is a role playing game supplement published by Survive RPG for use with Dungeons & Dragons based systems although no particular version is specified. This is an adventure, part of the Mini Quest series, that has a sequel, Sword of the Archon.

This is a four page PDF that is available from RPGNow as a Pay What You Want supplement.

The adventure starts with the characters arriving at a town that has recently been attacked. Much of the livestock is dead and the town is being attacked by hyenadons who fancy a taste of the remains.

Mini Quest: Trail of the GiantOnce the hyenadons are driven away, the characters are told that the town was attacked by a giant and are hired (if they are willing) to track down the giant and deal with it. One of the settlement’s residents comes with them – or goes separately if they refused – as her brother was the townsman slain in the attack, although she does not immediately reveal this.

There are nine more encounters in the local woods and surrounding area, many showing signs of the giant’s devastation. The characters can also find that the giant was hired to carry out the attack.

The final encounter is with the giant. Once he is defeated, the characters then have a choice over what to do. The man who arranged the attack is also there, having been captured by the giant. They can choose to help those who originally hired them, help the man who hired the giant – as his town will suffer as a consequence of his actions – or simply dump responsibility on the local military leader. In the giant’s treasure is the sword that has the clue to start Sword of the Archon.

Mini Quest: Trail of the Giant in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and, at only four pages, does not really need them. The text maintains a two column format and a number of minor errors were noticed. There are a variety of custom black and white illustrations as well as a slightly coloured map of the area.

This is a wilderness adventure although one with a specific destination. The adventure size could be increased by adding a few more encounters and perhaps some wandering monsters. As well as the combat encounters, there are some non-combat, including a puzzle that can be printed out, with the adventure finally ending in what is essentially an ethical dilemma. A nice range of different encounters.

Like many adventures in this series, it isn’t stated what level it is aimed for. The GM will have to determine this beforehand, as the adventure could prove dangerous to characters who are too low a level.

Mini Quest: Trail of the Giant is a nice little adventure and it can be checked out for free by clicking here.
