Lake of the Pirat King

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Lake of the Pirat King

Lake of the Pirat King by Cameron Donnelly & Richard Davis is a role playing game supplement published by Just a Fat Yeti for use with Mausritter. This is an adventure location.

The supplement is available as a five page Pay What You Want PDF from itch. One page is the front cover and about half a page the license.

Lake of the Pirat KingThe Setting explains that an abandoned boathouse stands in the wetlands, the former home of the Pirat King who ruled the wetlands. The king is dead and the Pirats fight against each other, establishing factions that wish to take over. The frogs also report a great beast lurking below the waters and many mice have vanished.

Hooks has a d6 table of reasons for mice to be crossing the wetlands.

Locations has a d6 table of locations found in the wetlands.

Encounters has a 1d6 table of encounters to have, followed by stats for Pirat, complete with factions, water vole, frog and pike, following the same style as the core book, though pike lacks variants.

Spells has four new spells with a watery theme, complete with three tokens for each.

Finally, Treasure has a 2d6 table of items of treasure.

Lake of the Pirat King in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is short enough that these are not needed. Navigation is okay. The text primarily follows a two-column black and white format and appeared to be almost free of errors. There are a number of black and white illustrations, which appear to be stock, but only one of the creatures, the pirat, has an image. Unfortunately, there isn’t a map of the wetlands. Presentation is okay.

This is a setting but much of it isn’t described in any great detail. The six different locations in the wetlands are only given a short sentence description, and the wetlands themselves aren’t covered in any great detail. The tables, creatures and new spells are useful; the supplement is perhaps best used as a seed for an adventure location which can then be fleshed out, rather than a fully described one in and of itself. Lake of the Pirat King can be found on itch.
