Invasive Species

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Invasive Species

Invasive Species is a role playing game supplement written and published by Michael Brown. This is an adventure for Cepheus Engine and, as such, is covered by the Open Game License with some parts considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 14-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $1.50 but was purchased at a reduced price during a sale. One page is the front cover, two the front matter, one the Contents and two the Open Game License.

Invasive SpeciesWhat You’re Reading explains that this is an adventure for Cepheus Engine and similar and how the mechanics work.

Plot Overview explains that the characters meet a farmer’s daughter at a spaceport who asks them for help.

The Heroes explains how many characters the adventure is aimed at.

Setting gives a brief outline of the planet.

Background gives more details on the planet.

The adventure then takes up most of the rest. An agribusiness with an aggressive reputation was recently granted rights, and the characters get caught up in their plots to dominate this agricultural world. They will need to come up with evidence as to what is going on and, most importantly and with difficulty, find someone they can actually give this evidence to so that it will be used.

Finally, NPC descriptions are given.

Invasive Species in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough that they would have been useful. The Contents covers the major sections. Navigation could be better. The text maintains a single column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are no illustrations. Presentation is plain, as is expected in these supplements.

This could be quite a difficult adventure. The characters are going to be tangling with a large interstellar corporation and one that has effectively suborned the local ruler. Getting the information needed is going to be tricky. Even more difficult is going to be getting it where it can be used properly. Exactly how this might be done isn’t really covered; these are classed as “no-frills” adventures so the Referee may have to do more development. The plot is, however, unusual. Invasive Species is an atypical adventure and it can be found by clicking here.
