Insect of Nightmares

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Insect of Nightmares

Insect of Nightmares by Rebecca Fincher is a role playing game supplement published by Wizards of the Coast through the DMs Guild Community Content Programme. This is a short adventure for use with Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition.

The supplement is available as a 10-page PDF from DMs Guild for $2.95 but was purchased at a reduced price thanks to a special offer. One page is the front cover and three pages are blank.

Insect of NightmaresThe adventure primarily depends on the players not knowing what is really going on, which makes covering any of what happens difficult. They wake up after falling asleep, including anyone on watch, to find themselves bound and gagged in small cells, captive of mind flayers. The characters will need to progress through a number of challenges, including puzzles, before having to fight each other to the death.

The final page of content has the stats and details for the Tromkomar, the insect the adventure revolves around, and the credits.

Insect of Nightmares in Review

The PDF has bookmarks, but they’re mangled and unusable. Navigation could be better, though the supplement is short enough that this isn’t a great problem. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are a number of stock colour illustrations. Presentation is decent.

This adventure could be a bit problematic to play. The major point is, of course, the characters have to fight each other, which could cause problems in the long term. Another problem is that the characters are effectively railroaded into the encounter. The insect has an ability that affects all resting or sleeping characters. It must first successfully curse a character in order to then use its ability on them, and can keep trying to curse them until it succeeds. When these two factors are combined, some players are definitely going to be annoyed by this adventure. Insect of Nightmares is definitely not suited for every group and can be found by clicking here.
