A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Inns of Hârn

Inns of Hârn is a role playing game supplement published by Columbia Games Inc. for use with Hârn and HârnMaster.

The supplement is available as a 36-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $14.99 but was purchased at a reduced price during a sale. It is possible, but hasn’t been confirmed, that it is available in printed form as well. Two pages are the front and rear covers and one page is blank.

The first page of content is the Interior Map Key, which explains what the various images on the maps are.

Inns of HârnThis is followed by an introduction explaining that five inns are including, covering a range of types, and that inns and taverns play an important role in gaming. The Innkeepers article is referenced for more details on how inns and taverns operate and a sidebar explains each inn includes a plan. The five inns are then summarised. The next page explains that the inn descriptions follow the same format, with a sidebar explaining how some of the information works.

The five inns then follow. The first page describes each, its history, service and accommodations, with a sidebar having its sign, location, owner, size, quality and price. The next page covers the food and drink available and their cost, with the sidebar providing further details on these where needed. The owner, family and staff are described, followed by the inn itself, along with maps. The final page has a list of regular clientele and adventure hooks.

Aranoal’s Inn is a poor quality and dubious inn in Coranan, the Thardic Republic, with an owner perfectly willing to sell the occasional individual into slavery.

The Blue Bell Inn is Geda, Chybisa, is not a great inn either, but the owner and food are better.

The Fox and Duck Inn is in Hediro, the Thardic Republic, and is more expensive, though the quality is perhaps not quite high enough.

The Green Wyvern Inn is in Shiran, the Thardic Republic, and is a place the city’s gentlefolk frequent; quality and price are both high. Interestingly, this has reference to a fanon article, Spice Merchant, on Lythia.com

The Lamp Inn is in Varden, Oselshire, Kaldor, on the Genin Trail and gets frequent travellers; prices are high but quality is not quite commensurate.

Inns of Hârn in Review

The PDF is bookmarked with major and minor sections linked. Navigation is okay. The text either follows a single column with sidebar or two column format and appeared to be free of errors. Each inn has black and white maps, plus there are some black and white illustrations and colour ones for the signs. Presentation is okay.

As the supplement itself states, inns and taverns are useful, and this has five with a decent amount of detail, from the various rooms to owner, staff and regulars to how things work together. There are no HârnMaster stats, so it can be used with any game, and the inns, with some occasional tweaking to fit, could be dropped into other settings without too many problems, making it generally useful. At full price, it is admittedly on the high side. Inns of Hârn can be found by clicking here.
