A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Hive

Hive by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with Cepheus Engine. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as an 18 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three the front matter and three the Open Game License.

HiveThe opening paragraphs explain that the characters are approached by a diplomat who has a problem, in that some important documents he was carrying were stolen by some large insects that only exist on his home planet of Xapytalzaus. He wants them recovering and has a good idea as to where they are.

Patron gives some details on the diplomat.

Complications has things that can go wrong, details that haven’t been shared and details on Xapytalzaus’s religious dictatorship.

Cek’Ens has details in the insects, including stats for different castes of the species.

Xapytalzaus has some brief details on the word; though not stated, the adventure is set in the Frontiers of Space.

Random Determination of the Location of the Document Bundle has a 2d6 table for determining where the missing documents are in the hive.

The Hive details the insects’ hive itself.

Other Interested Parties has some other people who have been hired to retrieve the documents.

Mission Completion Objectives are what’s needed for success.

The final page of content is a black and white map of the hive.

Hive in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation could be better. The text maintains a single column format and some minor errors were noticed. Bar the map and covers, there are no illustrations. Presentation is adequate.

This is a straightforward but potentially dangerous adventure. One of the biggest dangers isn’t the insects or the competitors, but the planet’s religion, which has some specific requirements and ignorance of them is no excuse. Being out in public is dangerous in and of itself. Hive can be found by clicking here.
