A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Gregorius21778: Unwelcome Phenomena

Gregorius21778: Unwelcome Phenomena is a role playing game supplement from Kai Pütz a.k.a Gregorius21778 for use with Lamentations of the Flame Princess.

This is a four-page PDF that is available from DriveThruRPG as a Pay What You Want Supplement. One page is the front cover and about half a page is the front matter.

Gregorius21778: Unwelcome PhenomenaThe introductory text explains that the supplement originated from a question about Spell Miscast Results Tables for LotFP, and this supplement was created from some fan articles for Dark Heresy, as examples of such tables, and rules for such, had been included in the supplement V*****s Are Magic.

The rest of the supplement is a table of 20 results. Some entries are marked as being a Risky Casting condition for Magic-Users who suffer from them. The results cover a range of things, all, as the title suggests, unwelcome, but some are definitely more unwelcome than most, from things breaking, being destroyed and cursed to bleeding, tinnitus, blinding, stunned and nightmares. Some of the results are minor, irritating or inconvenient, some are potentially dangerous and some are permanent, either totally permanent or requiring a curse to be removed.

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is not long enough to require such. Navigation is fine. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be almost free of errors. Bar the cover and page backgrounds, there are no illustrations. Presentation is okay.

Although the supplement is written for LotFP, it should be easy enough to slot it in to another system where there are, or could be, rules on spell failure. Whether used with LotFP or another system, it should be ensured that players are happy enough to deal with such problems; some of the more undesirable results are definitely not suited to every type of campaign. Gregorius21778: Unwelcome Phenomena is a nice little supplement on making spellcasting go wrong, perhaps badly wrong, and it can be found by clicking here.
