Gregorius21778: Treasure Fiends & Fiendish Treasure

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Gregorius21778: Treasure Fiends & Fiendish Treasure

Gregorius21778: Treasure Fiends & Fiendish Treasure is a role playing game supplement written and published by Kai Pütz a.k.a Gregorius21778 for use with Lamentations of the Flame Princess. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a seven page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. One page is the front cover, half the front matter and one the Open Game License.

Gregorius21778: Treasure Fiends & Fiendish TreasureThe opening paragraph discusses Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the desire for treasure, which inspired the contents of the supplement.

Treasure Fiends is the first part of the supplement, a collection of six monsters. A creature that causes coins to move towards its hoard, a harpy that charms people into bringing treasure, a lich that can curse those with greater wealth to lose it, a golem that turns metal into gold, a humanoid treasure guardian made from coins and giant spiders whose eggs look like emeralds; the new-born spiders are incredibly lethal.

Fiendish Treasures is a collection of five treasures, all of which could be described as being cursed. Treasure that actually costs XP – very nasty – money that is hard to spend, money that is too easy to spend, a lantern that makes all metal look like gold and a gem that causes gems to grow out of the owner’s body.

Gregorius21778: Treasure Fiends & Fiendish Treasure in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is short enough that these are not needed. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be mostly free of error. There are a number of appropriate colour illustrations and one that is black and white; presentation is decent.

This is a collection of nasty, and sometimes really nasty, especially for characters that like treasure, treasure-related monsters and items to encounter or find. The XP-costing treasure is a really nasty one, as it is not immediately obvious, and in OSR games XP lost is permanently lost. That one should perhaps be used sparingly. Having your treasure cursed to decrease in value, then turn to worthless dust, by a lich with a greed problem is also not nice. Gregorius21778: Treasure Fiends & Fiendish Treasure is a collection of nasty treasure and creatures and can be found by clicking here.
