A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Gregorius21778: Examples of the Dark Arts Vol.03

Gregorius21778: Examples of the Dark Arts Vol.03 is a role playing game supplement published by Kai Pütz a.k.a Gregorius21778. This is a collection of 15 spells for use with Lamentations of the Flame Princess, but it could probably be adapted to other Old School systems, although dark ones are more suited. This supplement is also available in a Powered by Fate version.

This is a fifteen page PDF that is available from RPGNow for $0.50 but was purchased for $0.38 during a sale. One page is the front cover and one page the front matter, license and how to use the supplement. It is also accompanied by a text file that is the changelog.

Gregorius21778: Examples of the Dark Arts Vol.03This supplement is really entitled Dark Summonings. The first page of content covers how to summon the creatures within. Of the 15 spells, 13 are suggested to be new variations of the summon spell, and should be researched as such. The remaining two are a magic item to be used with the summon spell and the other has instructions on how to learn the spell.

The spells themselves summon a variety of… interesting creatures. These creatures are all rather dark in nature, the spells tend to have evocative names and some of the powers are rather unpleasant. The caster can summon strange warriors, curse eaters, incorporeal monsters, spirits of murdered sorcerers and other such creatures.

The PDF lacks bookmarks and, although it isn’t long enough to truly require them, they would have been useful. The text maintains a single column format and, as usual, the author states that this isn’t the work of a native English speaker and this time there are more errors than usual, but not enough to make the supplement unusable. The cover and page backgrounds are in colour but the only illustrations are a couple of stock symbols. Presentation is okay.

The summonings are all dark and suited for a dark, perhaps very dark, fantasy game. Which is what LotFP can be, so they are well suited to that system. The descriptions are interesting, as are the spell names and summoned creatures, and they have evocative and sometimes odd or awful powers. Really, even for the full price of $0.50, this is good value, given the amount of content. It’s definitely worth more than that. Gregorius21778: Examples of the Dark Arts Vol.03 is recommended for anyone using a dark fantasy OSR system and it can be found by clicking here.

Thanks for your review, and for pointing me towards the (still) existing errors in the document. I just went over it in response to the review and corrected some more (hopefully: all) 🙂

    Sincerely

I really like this supplement. I also think it’s incredibly cheap; it’s easily worth three-four times the price in my opinion.
