A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Gregorius21778: Dreaded 13

Gregorius21778: Dreaded 13 is a role playing game supplement published by Kai Pütz a.k.a Gregorius21778 for use with Lamentations of the Flame Princess. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

This is a four-page PDF that is available as a Pay What You Want supplement from DriveThruRPG. One page is the front cover, around two thirds of a page is the front matter and one page is the Open Game License. The PDF comes in two versions, one with a coloured background and a printer friendly version without.

Gregorius21778: Dreaded 13There are some introductory paragraphs on using the supplement, which is suggested to be used once per group when a fitting occasion arises and to give an XP reward when it is used. Suggested reasons for using are the wrath of the gods, disturbing places they shouldn’t found an artefact they shouldn’t have or because the stars were not right. Or simply because Fate was having one of those days.

What starts the series of events is rolling a natural 13 on a d20. The first and last events are set; the remaining ones can be dropped in when appropriate. The first event is simply an ominous warning of things to come. Bad things then happen on every other natural 13, until a total of 13 have been rolled. These events are essentially failures when they should have been successes. The final event requires a Save vs. Death which does exactly what it says on the tin.

The PDF lacks bookmarks but with essentially one page of content it doesn’t need them. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be almost free of errors. There is a single piece of black filler; presentation is okay (it would have been nice to have a d20 showing the number 13 somewhere).

This is, as the author states elsewhere, like The Day of Manifest Misfortune, simply not fair and solely intended to make an adventure harder, but should simulate an ancient curse nicely. Players will see things going wrong when they shouldn’t and certainly using it multiple times isn’t recommended, and an XP reward definitely is.

It’s not quite clear how the triggers work. It could be that rolling a 13 immediately triggers a misfortune if it happens when one of the potential ones is happening. It could also be in some cases that it triggers a future event. This potentially suggests that some misfortunes could happen several times and others none, and also that several events could get stored up after several d13 rolls for relevant failures. Gregorius21778: Dreaded 13 is a deliberately not nice supplement aimed at troubling characters and it can be checked out for free by clicking here.
