Gregorius21778: Boarswood

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Gregorius21778: Boarswood

Gregorius21778: Boarswood is a role playing game supplement written and published by Kai Pütz a.k.a Gregorius21778 for use with Lamentations of the Flame Princess.

The supplement is available as a 22-page PDF from DriveThruRPG but was purchased at a reduced price thanks to a special offer. One page is the front cover, two thirds of a page is the front matter and Index and one page is supplement recommendations and adverts.

Welcome to Boarswood! explains that this is a small fictional barony during the Tudor period.

It starts with an overview of the barony, with a sidebar stating that this is all fictional and not even historically accurate (which is true), as the aim of the barony is to provide a starting base for PCs.

Gregorius21778: BoarswoodBoarswood Keep is the baron’s home and is given a brief overview, as is the hamlet of Keepsfoot at the base of the keep’s hill. The baron, his son, the keep’s chaplain and a woman who works at the tavern are briefly covered.

Calvenhill is the largest population centre in the barony. Important NPCs, various taverns and the church are covered.

Cornfork is an area of land dotted with various farms around Waywell Point, which has a smithy, shop and inn. Again, important NPCs and locations are covered.

Merryshire is the second largest settlement. The inn and taverns are described as well as a couple of notable NPCs, including a gunsmith who is not as competent as they think.

The village of Abbotspitt sits around an abbey. The abbey and abbot are given a brief overview as is the inn and its proprietor.

Mudheath is small community with little of interest.

The Thornmist Fens are visited for peat by the inhabitants of Mudheath.

Ravenpine is not part of the baron’s fief, but is set up with his permission, and is a logging camp. Notable NPCs are detailed.

Boarswood Forest is the forest after which the barony is named. It is home to, logically enough, boars, as well as grey wolves. There is also a witch, with a d12 table of rumours about her, and her stats and a list of services she can provide, from book reading to potions to spell scrolls.

A hex map of the barony follows, along with details on travelling through it and a list of possible investments.

Plot Hooks & Ideas for Sidequests has a list of various adventure hooks for the barony.

The next seven pages are filled with price lists for the various goods and services provided by various locations within the barony.

Gregorius21778: Boarswood in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and has enough different sections that these would have been useful. The Index covers the major sections and is hyperlinked. Notable, there are many internal hyperlinks that link references to what they are referencing. Navigation is decent. The text maintains a two-column format and a number of minor errors were noticed. Apart from the map, the supplement has a variety of pieces of black and white filler. Presentation is decent.

The supplement describes a fiefdom in a good amount of detail. The whole barony is only around 48 miles across at its largest, so it should be easy enough to drop into other settings. Only minor changes would really need to be made for it to work in other locations; mostly some of the names and the religion. Gregorius21778: Boarswood is a decent little supplement describing a useful home base or adventure area for PCs and it can be found by clicking here.
