Foulest Reptiles

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Foulest Reptiles

Foulest Reptiles by Alan Patrick is a role playing game supplement published by Schwalb Entertainment for use with Shadow of the Demon Lord. This is part of the Monstrous Pages series that introduces new monsters.

The supplement is available from DriveThruRPG as a 5-page PDF for $1.49 although it was purchased at a reduced price during a sale. Around a quarter of a page is the Credits.

Foulest ReptilesThe first page is mostly opening fluff about the lizardmen, where they live and how they dwell in the ruins of older, more advanced settlements in the swamps, almost as if they have a connection to them.

A Fallen Empire explains that, long ago, serpent people arrived on Urth, fleeing their own world through the Void, to create a new civilisation safe from demons and ruin. The serpent people were highly advanced, creating a civilisation and enslaving humanoids. Until they annoyed the faeries, who cast the serpent people’s civilisation down.

Few of the serpent people survived. Most descended into barbarism and degenerated into the lizardmen. The lizardmen are extremely unfriendly, taking great pleasure in, eventually, killing those they encounter; they have the skill to keep those captured alive as they are tortured. They also use traps to capture prey. Stats for a Lizardman and a Lizardman Shaman follow.

Next are some details on creating lizardman characters. They are intended to be used to create unique NPC lizardmen; although they could be used for player characters, lizardmen are unlikely to join with other ancestries, are more powerful than many and the rules are therefore not as complex. There are also a few ways of creating unique lizardmen, with different abilities.

Variant Lizardmen has some different species of the creatures. This references the serpent people in passing, and mentions the Freeport Companion as a place to find details on them. The Dragonman is a huge creature found in the Bone Marsh that vomits corrosive juices. The Horned Devil lives in Balgrendia have many spikes, can squirt blinding blood from their eyes and are believed to be devils escaped from Hell. Finally, the Indigon is a lizardman from the Nine Cities, one that can almost pass as human, especially in dim light. This doesn’t make them friendly, though, and these creatures can glide down from above.

Foulest Reptiles in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is short enough that these are unnecessary. Navigation is fine. The text maintains a two-column full colour format and appeared to be free of errors. There are two colour illustrations of lizardmen. Presentation is good.

This supplement provides a new creature to terrorise those heading into territories where they are common. It also provides a creature that could be dominated and used by the still-intelligent serpent folk, adding brute force to the intelligence and knowledge of that being. Foulest Reptiles is a nice little supplement with a new monster and it can be found by clicking here.
