Faces of the Tarnished Souk: The Mad Wench Maelgatryx (PFRPG)

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Faces of the Tarnished Souk: The Mad Wench Maelgatryx (PFRPG)

Faces of the Tarnished Souk: The Mad Wench Maelgatryx (PFRPG) by Matt Banach and Justin Sluder is a role playing game supplement published by Rite Publishing for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result. This is a single NPC at three different CRs.

The supplement is available as a 21-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $2.95 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a bundle. One page is the front cover, one the front matter, one the Open Game License and two are ads.

Faces of the Tarnished Souk: The Mad Wench Maelgatryx (PFRPG)The Mad Wench Maelgatryx gives some introductory text on the NPC who now runs an evil tavern in the Tarnished Souk. Maelgatryx is now somewhat of a mess and doesn’t care that she is. There are details on Dreamburning and Maelgatryx, some details on The Rotgut Cauldron, lore on Maelgatryx and using her in game.

The three different CR versions follow, from high to low.

The CR 7 version is a rakshasa-spawned tiefling barbarian (drunken brute) 1/witch 5 and her raven familiar is covered.

The CR 14 version is a rune-carved rakshasa-spawned tiefling barbarian (drunken brute) 1/witch 10 with a cacodemon familiar; rune-carved is the biggest change here.

The CR 20 version is a rune-carved rakshasa-spawned tiefling barbarian (drunken brute) 1/witch 16, again with a cacodemon, with new magic items, including a minor artefact, new feats, new witch patron, new dream traits and new spells.

Rune-Carved Creature is a new acquired template.

Variant Tieflings has a d10 table of heritages and a d100 table of abilities.

Faces of the Tarnished Souk: The Mad Wench Maelgatryx (PFRPG) in Review

The PDF is bookmarked with major and minor sections linked. Navigation is decent. The text maintains a two-column black and white format and appeared to be free of errors. Apart from the cover image, there are a couple of other illustrations, at least one of which appears to be custom. Presentation is decent.

Rite Publishing is known for their complex NPCs and this is definitely one of them. With a host of abilities and features at the highest CR incantation, as well as the other features, this is an interesting, and interestingly erratic, NPC to encounter.
